Skott and Shawna’s RTW Packing Lists!

Today is our last day in Canada.

After tearful goodbyes at the airport saying goodbye to Shawna’s sister, grandparents, and my entire family we left for Vernon, BC to spend the last few days with Shawna’s mom and dad, Guy and Maureen. As we type we are back in the Calgary airport and then we are out of here….flying over the pond to sunny England!!!

It will be sunny, right??!!

Before we go anywhere however, it’s important to make sure we have all the right gear. We bought our packs awhile back, and so now it is time to fill them!

Wow – well there you go…all this has fit into our bags and onto our backs for the next 15-18 months! As it stands, Shawna’s bag weighs around 27lbs and Skott’s is 32lbs. Admittedly, we were hoping our bags might be a wee bit lighter, and do suspect that we will ditch a few things along the way, especially for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain mid July.

What do you think? Have we overpacked? Underpacked? Is there anything that we have missed?

Great list… looks like y’all are ready to go!!!

OH & YAY FOR BEING AN OLD SPICE MAN!!! I love OLD SPICE~

    • Skott and Shawna June 20, 2011 at 7:25 am #

I used your list as one of my main resources Jaime…thanks for all the help! I don’t suppose your love of Old Spice has anything to do with their advertising does it?

      • Jaime June 21, 2011 at 8:22 am #

No it really doesn’t I have been an OLD SPICE fan for like ever. It is really one of the only deodorants that works.

Looks ok to me! You’ll probably dump some stuff along the way – or at least, that’s what happened to me :) On my second day away I was ruthless and got rid of loads of stuff.

But then by the time I came home to Sydney the weight was back up there again! I think 12kgs is awesome (but a bit of a dream!) and 15-16kgs about the max before it gets to heavy to lift or walk with for longer than 10 minutes.

    • Skott and Shawna June 20, 2011 at 7:41 am #

Well we are two days in and Shawna has already decided to get rid some stuff, so yes, I have no doubt that the contents of our backpacks will look much different by the end of our trip. Currently my bag is actually lighter than Shawna’s, and somehow that doesn’t seem fair, so there might be a bit of transference as well :)

Wow! I’m so excited for you!
Hope you managed to find someone to rent your home last minute.

Just found your blog, excited to follow your travels. We leave on our rtw trip in about a year, so it will be good to tide us over.

Not sure about the jeans let us know when/if you ditch them. We’re hoping to fit everything into 40l bags so we’ll have to make some tradeoff decisions. Like your choice in electronics, we’re thinking of taking macbook air (11inch), 2 kindles, 2 ipods, 1 micro 4/3 camera, and 1 point and shoot which amount to about the same things you’re taking. We’ll bring 2 hard drives, one for each bag that will be duplicates of each other.

My wife is a runner so she’ll be interested to hear about how that goes for you on the trip.

    Have fun and safe travels!

Hi Daniel – thanks for stopping in and saying hi!! Be sure to let us know when you get your blog (if you do one) up and running.

As far as the jeans go, I took my lightest pair, and I would be surprised if I do ditch them, but I suspect I will be surprised by several things that happen on this journey of ours so who knows :) As far as bag sizes go, there really doesn’t seem to be a standard sizing. Shawna’s bag in theory is 10L bigger than mine, but there is no way that her’s actually holds more. Regardless of how you cut it, a 40L bag would be awesome if you could do it…I wish we could have, but as it stands it would be tight….again, it is so tough to tell how much of this stuff we will actually be carrying at the end.

      Keep in touch!

Seems like a great list-although I did see you mention that Shawna already got rid of some stuff-that’s what I did a few days in too! Although as we have been travelling I have bought things cheap-got rid of them, bought some other stuff-got rid of it-as I go my bag has evolved.
One thing I was so happy to add to my bag was a pair of jeans-I hated travelling for one year without a pair-I don’t care how heavy or impractical they are! I love them!

    • Skott June 30, 2011 at 5:43 pm #

Hey Elise – this is indeed a work in progress isnt it?? I have no doubt that half the things I packed on day one, will never make it home….let’s just hope I return with less than I came with…I do NOT want any more to carry! :)

And I am with you, I will not be turfing the jeans…I don’t see it. I just look too damm good in them…HA!

moisturizer will be ditched when you hit asia, believe us hahaha, you will need talc powder or somethin’ to dry your shit out!

Old spice is a bitch to find on the road out east!

RAZORS are huge deal my friend! The ones in Asia are not made for hairy dudes (or chicks??) So make sure you have enough when you hit the poorer countries…

Took the plunge! Enjoy it, it goes by FAST!!!

    • Skott June 27, 2011 at 12:14 am #

Fortunately I am not a hairy dude, nor is Shawna a hairy chick :) ….but I have brought a handful with me….thanks for all the tips guys.

      Keep in touch!

Good packing list! Packing light is always recommended (as you will soon discover for yourself, if you haven’t already). I predict, like some of the other commenters have already said, that you will get rid of some items along the way. Don’t worry about this, it happens to everyone ;) You will soon know what you really need vs. what is just weighing you down. I would suggest you not get too sentimental with anything you’re carrying, and don’t be afraid to mail stuff home if needed.

Have a great trip, we’re looking forward to future updates!

    • Skott July 5, 2011 at 6:21 pm #

Thanks Bryan – I just got to make sure that Shawna doesn’t figure that I am one of those things weighing her down and we should be good to go! :)
Also – appreciate all the help your site has been, helping us with budgeting…much appreciated! Keep in touch!

Did you 2 ever consider carrying 2 laptops since you’re a couple? I really don’t want to, but figuring it might come in handy since Q would be writing posts on hers and I could be photo editing on mine. Don’t want to be bogged down by having 2 laptops during our RTW.

    • Skott December 4, 2011 at 3:53 pm #

Yes, actually – if we were starting from scratch, we WOULD have taken two laptops….there is tons of blog stuff, plus general research which we do online, and it would have been much more efficient with a small second laptop…absolutely. I would recommend to do it, if you have the space.

  9. Gerard ~ GQ trippin December 5, 2011 at 5:15 am #

Good to know. That’s what I was afraid to hear. Maybe 1 laptop and 1 iPad can suffice.

I doubt you will have a problem if that is what you are carrying…good luck!
