She Kicked My Ass in Casablanca

Are you ready to run?!

“It’s just a fun run. Let’s just make sure we enjoy it.”

“We run for twelve minutes – one minute break. Run for twelve. Walk for one. Takin’ it easy.”

These were the lines she fed me in the weeks leading up to the Casablanca Half Marathon which we had been training for since the completion of the Camino.

But eight minutes in, she drastically changed her tune.

“Um, I think I will just take a break every 5kms. Is that okay with you?”

For those of you who don’t run this is more like taking a break every 25 minutes, as opposed to every 12 which is what I was promised. Not cool.

Gasping, I weakly nod in agreement.

However, five kilometers comes and goes…..

STILL no break??!?!

It is official.

I’ve been deceived.
So much for romance and running.

My vision of Shawna and I crossing the finish line of our first international half marathon, hand-in-hand, slow-motion, big smiles??

But I guess that is just how it was meant to be. I am just glad I was able to hang on for the first 10kms.

I went on to finish in very typical Skott-fashion, just under two hours at 1:55:56.

SOOOO excited!

Shawna however finished in the Top 7 amongst all females AND set a new personal best by crossing the line at 1:46:50!!

Despite the wound lickin’ we both were so happy that we stayed in Morocco long enough to complete the run. The day was ideal, not too hot, but the energy was smoking! A Morrocan steel drum crew pumped up the thousands of participants to kick off the race, and music, spectators, and palm trees kept us motivated from kilometer one to twenty-one. It has inspired us (i.e. Shawna) to start to research additional half marathons which may fall into our path for the remainder of our journey (so much for my time spent googling beers of the world). Looks like we have found one that just might work in Vietnam.

And of course we capped off the night with great celebration…. over looking the ocean from the terrace of the very un-Morrocan TGI-Fridays. What a beautiful, cultural experience!!!!

Do you know of any other amazing marathons around the world that you would recommend to us???

Let us know below!!

It was chilly, but a sweater wasn't necessary

Never to late to start….wherever you are in the world, see if there is an upcoming race in your area. Half marathons are very ‘doable’, and there are a lot of training resources online. Let us know if you do!!! We will be cheering for you!
