Phu Quoc-ing Around in Vietnam with Mom and Dad

We were so excited waiting at the airport for our first visitors to arrive!

Mom and Dad arrived after a day and a half of travel, entering straight into the madness that is Saigon. Taking the taxi back to the backpacker district, Pham Ngu Lao, I think they were really wondering what they had gotten themselves into. Sure there was no more ice and snow, but this didn’t mean that the roads looked any safer!

No traffic lights's a matter of weaving through and crossing your fingers!

The good news is that we did arrive at their hotel, safely, and in no time at all they had fully recovered from any jet lag they might have been experiencing – the Rick & Jackie Vietnam Tour 2012 was officially underway!

It was sensory overload in the bright lights of Ho Chi Minh, and after a cyclo ride into oncoming traffic, and a very sobering afternoon at the War Remnants Museum, we decided to lighten the mood and take the quick flight to Phu Quoc Island!

It's all fun and games until you get to the round-about!!

We initially arrived at Paris Beach Resort, which was…well…a disaster. Having your bungalow sit directly in front of a swamp-like body of water, doesn’t really do justice to the Island, and so after a quick bit of research and a little negotiating, we ended up at the Saigon Phu Quoc Resort.

Swamps are great for ogres, not so much for in-laws!

Five days of paradise on Phu Quoc Island turned out to be the perfect start to our adventures together. We took full advantage of the $4 massages on the beach in front of the Moon Resort, we soaked up the rays by the pristine pool, wasted the hours away with a couple of games of kaiser and worked up a sweat playing tennis. What more could one ask for!? For us it was a vacation from our vacation…a definite upgrade from our life in hostels.

Russian luxury...yep, these guys own the place and did it up to the nines!

Upgraded to the president suites!!

Does this look like a backpacker to you?

A beautiful sunset at Phu Quoc. When darkness sets the fishermen will be out catching squid.

Zebra snails at the night market. Ewwww!

The girls goofing around in the pool…

Safety first! Check out THESE pool rules!

Of course sometimes, things DID get a little competitive...

What a fabulous adventure! I’m glad you left the swampy Paris beach resort and found a presidential suite to enjoy instead. Everyone needs a “vacation from their vacation” sometimes :)
