Photo Blog – The Brighter Side of Phnom Penh

Our post the other day on the Cambodian Genocide was a grim one for obvious reasons. It is a mind-numbing tragedy that cannot be overlooked when you travel through Phnom Penh, or anywhere in Cambodia.

But, it is important to know that there is another side to the city. Today in Cambodia, despite the horrors of 35 years ago, the people are strong, smiling, and resilient. It is a city that still has a lot of rebuilding to do, but they have come a long way (as the photos of the various temples below should illustrate). We really felt there was a charm to Phnom Penh; it felt like a ‘ quaint French sidewalk cafe’ sort of city.

We only had two full days to spend here, and one of them was spent on a walking tour of Central Phnom Penh taking in remarkable architecture, interesting food, and experiencing the warmth and friendliness of the local people.

This is a short post, the rest of which are photos….but we wanted to make sure you were able to see the brighter side of Phnom Penh just as we did!

Every night at sunset, they held a massive group exercise class by the river. You may recognize one of the participants?

While one of us was exercising, the other one was.... practicing photography?

The Blue Oyster is a coffee shop in Phnom Penh, and this is what their 'tables looked like.... have you ever seen a more comfortable coffee shop?

The traffic of Phnom Penh, nowhere close to the insanity that took place in Ho Chi Minh

Larvae - a nice light snack.

Also, on an unrelated topic, we have just recently had our profile posted on BootsnAll’s RTW Travel Guide. This is an amalgamation of several other RTW travellers who are available to offer their advice to anyone who may be considering embarking on a journey similar to our own. We are in the company of some pretty amazing fellow-globetrotters….thanks BootsnAll!

Oh that picture of larvae…instantly reminds me of the smell as I walked along any given Korean street (I may just puke now haha).

Glad to see you had a great time with your parents. Still following….just haven’t commented in a while. So “hello” to you both :)

It is indeed an interesting cuisine, isn’t it? Cheers Stephanie!
