Cycling Italy Day 3: Will This Path Ever End ?!?!

July 22 – Bressanone to Trento, Italy (130kms!!!)

We finally had a chance to leave a little earlier in the morning. 10:30 is hardly a sunrise start, but it did give us a chance to get a few more kms in. (“A few more”, turned out to be a slight understatement.)

The first 50kms from Bressanone to Bolzano were basically downhill. Combine that with the river-side scenery the whole way, and we were grinning ear to ear. We were crusing!

Just outside Bolzano, Italy

Initally our plan was to pedal until a town called Salerno, which, when leaving that morning we believed to be about 70kms away. However, we seemed to be making good time, and so before we even got to Salerno, we decided to go all the way to Trento, which was a major checkpoint in both of our minds. We believed that was only 30kms further….for a total of 100kms.

We should have double checked that.

You know how sometimes, you get a particular number in your head, and despite logic and basic math, you cannot be convinced that the number is anything less than one hundred per cent accurate? Yeah, well…that was us! Somehow our numbers were off, and at the end of the day we had travelled around 134.1kms along the bike path to get to Trento! Might I add, that for the last three hours the wind had picked up and was doing everything it could to knock our clumsy bikes off the road.

We were both beyond tired. We were numb.

However we did what we could to keep motivating each other to make the finish line, creaking into Trento around 8:15 that night. We stumbled around a little, trying to find a hostel, and after a quick change of clothes were ready for a much needed bite to eat by about 9:30. I have never devoured a pasta that quickly in all my life.

Easy to pedal through scenery like this....

I am starting to see a pattern here:Wake Up. Pedal your ass off. Eat like a madman. One beer. Pass out. Repeat.

Total Distance To Date: 251.3 kms

Shawna reminding me that we better be somewhere nice for her birthday!

Italian Apples right off the tree - the perfect snack for a long cycle!

I love the cycling adventure updates. As soon as Mike heard you guys were cycling, he got that look in his eye and it was all I could do to convince him that 35 degrees is too hot to cycle across Mexico!

Thanks Ashley!! Yeah, 35 degrees may be a little warm… and difficult to do when you have uno cervaza in your hand!

Skott and Shawna, I stumbled upon your blog a few days ago and love this series of cycling to the Italian border. Congratulations to both of you for doing it and reaching Cremona! I was so excited to read about your adventure, as it’s been a bucket list wish of mine to bike through Italy. I’m going to be writing a blog post about this wish, and was wondering if I could point a link to your blog?

Hi Patricia – it was indeed one of the highlights of our time in Western Europe….hopefully we will do something else similar somewhere else in the world before we go home. We would be delighted to have you share our link on your post…please let us know if you have any additional questions.

      Thanks
