7 Super Shots: Epic Travel Adventures

Chain letters, chain emails… you know them right? Pass this letter on to three of your friends or you will be cursed with eternal damnation…yada yada yada.

Well this is sort of like that… call it a chain post, but within the travel blogging community. A few months ago, our friend Jill from Jack and Jill Travel asked us to be part of this 7 Super Shots chain post (put on by HostelBookers). It requires us to go through the travel pics that we have taken to date, and find some of our favourites which fit into certain categories. Then we post our photos to the world and also nominate 5 other travel bloggers to make their own photographic contributions.

Sounds like fun, right? We think so!

Unfortunately, we have dropped the ball big time on Jill… she sent this to us at the end of March and we still haven’t completed our assignment. Until now.

Here’s hoping we haven’t already been eternally dammed.

1. Takes Our Breath Away

The Monastery, Petra, Jordan

In our humblest opinions, if there is one thing you should travel halfway across the world simply to see, it is the lost city of Petra. We spent a day and a half walking through this outstanding city, with ours mouths gaping open the whole way. I cannot even begin to imagine the work involved. This is a photo of the Monastery one of the more prominent buildings within Petra, and my personal favourite. If you look carefully, you can see that tiny speck sitting on the steps…that’s me!

Want to see more of Petra? Here you go…

2. Makes Us Laugh/Smile

I was going back and forth between two different ones, so I think I might as well just include both!

Mounting the elephant, Chiang Mai, Thailand

When Carly and Marissa came to see us in Thailand, going for an elephant ride was high on the list of priorities. It was a crazy enjoyable day… made even more enjoyable when we all were witness to Carly’s creative attempt to get back onto her elephant after lunch…. awesome!

Here is Shawna’s full post on our time with the elephants.

Celebrating Holi, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I spent a very quick three days in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia while getting my visa for Thailand. As it happened, my timing could not have been better as I was there in time for the Hindu festival of Holi. This picture encompasses how much fun you can have with colour!

3. Makes Us Dream

Sailing the San Blas Islands, Panama

This photo reminds me of one of those Freedom 55 retirement commercials. Sigh, we always have been a little ahead of our time. :) Sailing off into the sunset on the San Blas Islands.

4. Makes Us Think

Palestinian family walking alongside the Separation Wall, Jerusalem

This was one of the biggest eye-openers on our entire journey so far. This photo is only a tiny segment of the 700km 8 metre high concrete structure separating Palastinians from Jerusalem. The building in the background is a Palestinian University in the middle of a Palestinian neighbourhood. Before the wall was erected this walk might have only been a ten minutes walk for a lot of the students in the area. Now, many of them would have to walk several additional kilometres to the nearest checkpoint, with no guarantee that they will be granted permission to go through. We learned a lot about the situation when we took a tour of the West Bank through the Israeli Committee Against Housing Demolition. A ridiculous eye-opener… just one example of an apartheid that still takes places today.

5. Makes Our Mouths Water

Homemade couscous in Meknes, Morocco

Ooooooh, Moroccan couscous! This particular picture is a little extra-special to us because Shawna actually helped to put this outstanding meal together with help from her Morrocan friends at the riad we were staying at in Meknes. The only thing that would make this picture better is if it would have been a scratch n sniff!

6. Tells A Story

Lake Atitlan Marathon, Panajachel, Guatemala

We decided to volunteer for the Lake Atitlan Half Marathon while we were learning Spanish in San Pedro. When we first arrived everything seemed quite disorganized, and the day was overcast (not a surprise in rainy season), so we were wondering what we got ourselves into. However once we were set up and the runners began passing through our water station all that was forgotten. It was so incredible and motivational being able watch these guys and gals run by. We were giving them all the support we had, distributing water to them, cheering so loud (in two languages!) that we were both unable to talk the next day.

Near the end of the pack, we soon see this gentleman in the white hat running with his son. As it turns out, he is 88-years old…and fit! This was clearly not his first race, and he completed this one 100% on his own power. We were so inspired!! Amazing!

7. Most Proud Of (aka Our National Geographic Shot)

Children in the village of Tua, Ghana

Not sure if this would ever actually make it into a National Geographic magazine, but it is one of my favourites. The photo was taken in the tiny village of Tua in Northern Ghana. Shawna and I were volunteering there for two weeks, painting their brand new school. Each day before we left we would play soccer with the children or teach them new songs (like Mmmmp mmmmp Went The Little Green Frog), and we really became attached to them. This photo was taken on our last day there. I love the different emotions on each of the boy’s faces, especially the one with his tongue sticking out!

And Now For Five Our Nominations…

Okay, actually there was enough interest that we are cheating a little… we are actually nominating six fellow travel bloggers. Take some time to check out their blogs too, these guys (and gals) are good!

1. Mike and Ashley from Traveled Earth
2. Chrystal from Chrystal-Clear
3. Sam and Sarah from Food Travel Bliss
4. Rachel and Euan from Our Wee Trip
5. Dani and Jessica from Globetrotter Girls
6. Cole and Adela from Four Jandals

I know, I know… all of our lives our busy on the road, and we always seem behind on our posts, but try not to be as delinquient as we were. Grab a glass bottle of wine one night next week, and have some fun going through your photographic archives!!! You’ll be glad you did! Looking forward to seeing your pics guys!

Fabulous photos – love all of them! The photo of your sail around the San Blas Islands makes me think that maybe we should go from Panama to Colombia by boat after all! And I didn’t know Holi is celebrated that big in KL but considering that they also have a huge Thaipusam celebration it shouldn’t have surprised me :) Oh and thanks for nominating us – it will be so hard to pick 7 photos out of the 25,000+ we took in the last 2.5 years on our trip!
