365 Days of Get Up and Globing!

It’s hard to believe that as of Sunday, June 17th we have been on the road traveling for an entire year. On one hand it doesn’t seem that long ago that we were in England tasting cream tea and visiting little Sophie and my Uncle Rob and Aunt Jennie in The Isle of White. On the other hand, when we look back and think of all the places we’ve seen and the things we’ve done it feels surreal that we’ve fit it all into a year. And the crazy part is that we feel like we’ve just brushed the surface of all the places we want to see in the world!

Just over a year ago I was testing out my bag!

Skott trying on his backpack and figuring out how we could visit every country in the world in one year.

So where will we be for our Get Up & Globe anniversary? We’ll be sailing in the San Blas Islands in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Panama with my parents. We can’t think of a better place to be for the celebration and I’m so grateful that my parents are here to celebrate with us. We’ve been extremely lucky that both of our parents have been a part of this journey as well as my younger sister Carly and her friend Marissa (who basically became another sister after spending 7 weeks with us in Southeast Asia).

And so, in honour of this one year milestone, we did a little reminiscing and put together a few fun stats about our last 365 days on the road:

Beds slept in by Skott: 153
Beds slept in by Shawna 156

Our room in Chefchaouen, Morocco

Mangoes Eaten: More than we could possibly count!

22 Countries Visited (for our purpose, we considered a country ‘visited’ if we spent more than 24 hours there): England, Scotland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Jordan, Israel, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia (Shawna only), Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama

27 Airports Visited: Calgary, London, Edinburgh, Memmingen, Madrid, Tangier, Accra, Cairo, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Dalat, Danang, Hanoi, Nha Trang, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Bali (Shawna only), Singapore (Shawna only), Tokyo, NYC, Miami, Guatemala City, San Jose, David

Number of Pounds of Skott Lost Between the Camino and Experiencing the Aftermath of Some Very Skanky Meat in Fez, Morocco: 20

19 Modes of Transportation:
bus, camel, elephant, bike, motorbike, tuk-tuk, canoe, kayak, taxi, foot, train, plane, horse drawn carriage, ferry, sky train, subways, long tail boat, a wagon pulled by cows in Mali, tro-tro, and keel boat

Number of Children We Really Really Wish We Could Have Adopted So Far: 10…at least

Number Of Haircuts: 6 for Skott (in Pamplona, Meknes, Ouagadougou, Amman, Phnom Penh, and Bangkok), 4 for Shawna (Chefchaouen, Amman, Bangkok, Bali)

Number Of Hospital/Doctor Visits (all very minor so we feel very lucky): 6
Carrion de los Condes, Spain: Skott had a 24 hour flu
Tamale, Ghana (2): Skott throws himself of a motorbike, and needs several opinions on what he has done to his shoulder
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (2): Shawna is trying to curb her stomach issues
Guatemala City, Guatemala: Skott can’t stop peeing and thinks he might be becoming a diabetic. Fortunately this is not the case.

Bouts of Traveler’s Diarrhea: 4 (Skott 1, Shawna 3)

Number Of Family Visits: 3 totaling 72 days so far

Rick and Jackie join us in Vietnam

Carly & Marissa arrive in Bangkok, Thailand. We did the “Banana Pancake Route” from Bangkok to Bali in our 7 weeks together!

Mom and Dad arrived in Panama June 9th!!

Items Lost: 3(Skott’s shorts on the Camino…it was hilarious watching him ask everyone at the hostel “Donde esta my shorts”, Shawna’s buff in Morocco and Shawna’s sunglasses in Hanoi)

Number Of Times One Of Us Was Locked in A Bathroom: 2 (both Shawna…one was actually just this morning, the other was for half an hour in Jerusalem which was not my best 30 min. spent on this trip)

And ZERO REGRETS that one year ago today we left Canada, having quit our jobs, rented our house, lent out our cars and packed up two backpacks in order to travel around the world together.

Walking through the dusty archways in Morocco

We’ve spent more time together in the last year than many couples probably do in the first 5 years of their marriage. We’ve learned lots about each other and we’ve shared some incredible experiences in all corners of the world. We continue to feel extremely lucky and grateful that we have been able to experience this awesome adventure and share it with all of you.

So what happens now?

My parents are touring Panama with us until June 23rd (and we can’t wait to share our Panamanian adventures with you when we catch up on our blog…my parents went zip-line gliding with us!!!). Then Skott and I will be heading to Boquete, Panama to do an “inn-sitting” job that we came across on Trusted House Sitters. We’ll be living in the mountains of Panama near the Costa Rican border where they grow the majority of Panama’s coffee. Housesitting was on our list of things we wanted to try on this trip so we are pumped that we’ll be able to check that off the list as well.

And then, who knows!!?? We’ve been hearing that the best place in the world to learn salsa is in Columbia. We’ve got a little travel left in us yet…and a few more dollars in the travel budget so we’re going ride this wave a little longer. We hope that you’ll continue to be a part of this journey!!

Happy Travel-versary! I think it’s unusual to have so much company on an RTW trip – what a great chance to spend time with family and friends! The inn-sitting sounds interesting – good luck!

Hi, I just found your blog and wanted to say Happy Travel Anniversary! Your blog is really interesting and your travels sound amazing! We’ve recently set up our own travel blog, although we won’t be travelling for a few years yet we have a huge passion for it and it’s great to get inspiration from bloggers like yourselves!

Cool James – thanks so much! Travelling is definitely one of things we have a monstrous passion for as well (obviously). Keep saving that money (I promise ever penny saved will be worth it). When we were just planning our trip, I would spend hours every day checking out other travel blogs. A huge inspiration indeed. Thanks for reading – and let us know if you have any more questions!

I came across your business card this evening and just spent the last 30 minutes reading your blog. It looks like you are both having an amazing time in your year away and you are still going !! I am very envy of your ability to travel the globe – I am off to Canada for my summer holiday, which seem very tame now.

I met you in the Cork and Bottle in London. If you do ever found yourself in London again, I am still very happy to offer you your own private tour of the Houses of Parliament. I shall avoid talks of politics and instead focus on the history and scandals.

Will you stop in six months time or are you going to continue for 24 months ?!

All the best you wonderful people :o )

    • Skott July 20, 2012 at 4:28 pm #

Hey Irving!! Wow – long time no hear…amazing to hear from you! Of course we remember you (and the Cork & Bottle for that matter), and we do still talk about the private tour invitation we received but just weren’t able to take advantage of…. not sure when the next time is that we will be in London, but we WILL not miss out on that invite a second time around.

Don’t tell anyone, but it is true…our travels are slowly winding down (at least for this trip), we have promised to be home by Christmas but I have a feeling it might even be a little sooner than that!

Thanks again for saying hi – it made our night!

      • Irving July 20, 2012 at 10:04 pm #

Home by Christmas… sounds like a good target to have. Your family must be missing you. And you’re probably missing the washing machine and hot taps more!!

I am quite a random person; I’ve given a tour to a woman from Aussie, a couple from the States and a random lost person wandering the building. When I get the chance, I can email you pictures of Queen Victoria toilets, which you won’t find online… Mind you, that might be a step too far, sending pictures of toilets! Lol It is help it one of the first flush toilet made by John Crapper. Sitting on the John.. aha!

I thought I would have left years ago but I haven’t. So probably be around in years to come. It is lovely that you did remember me. Hope whatever side of the moon you can see tonight, you’re having a fantastic time. Irv x

        • Skott July 26, 2012 at 1:29 am #

Irving – you send us toilet shots any time you want mi amigo….. :)

          Waiting with baited breath.

Enjoy Canada – where are you going?
